Great review of a fantastic movie. But one question: why should Bigelow be characterized as a "guy's director"? Why not just a great director (woman or not) who consistently makes solid, riveting films? She's a great storyteller with a great eye - and one who can use subtlety to its maximum effect, as The Hurt Locker shows. I don't think gender has anything to do with that - despite whatever angle the movie marketers decide to take with "genderizing" the subject matter or genre....

Also, I absolutely agree with you about the one off-note moment of the film being when James lets the job get too personal. Other than that, I also agree that this is a terrifically well-made movie! One of Oscar's 10 best pics of Oscar 2009? ;-)
