Traitor isn’t exactly what you would call a bad movie. It’s just not half as clever or intelligent as it thinks it is or tries to be. The film actually makes for some pretty wonky math. One part mindless summer fun plus one part intellectual fall drama equals a whopping zero success.

Hamlet 2
August 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off
Hamlet 2 is deliriously profane and marvelously hilarious, an outrageous, sarcastic satire that uses absurdist humor to confront an age old question — what happens when you love something more than life itself, but are not remotely good at it? Mixing South Park vulgarity with Alexander Payne-esque insight, Hamlet 2 is a pageant film about […]

Death Race
August 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off
Death Race is the cinematic equivalent of running your fingernails down a chalkboard — a chaotic, adrenaline infused, unintelligible noisemaker in which every image is crafted to look cool at the expense of actually being cool.

The House Bunny
August 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off
If The House Bunny is successful, it will be almost entirely because of the vivacious, sexy and downright adorable Anna Faris. Although the film is yet another in a long line of hackneyed, low-brow comedies this year, it is rescued by the witty charms and bubbly personality of its star.

The Longshots
August 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off
What is it about sports movies that consistently inspires? The most mediocre sports film can still stir the heart and enthuse the blood, if only for the short span of time in which they flicker in the darkness of the theater. The truly great sports films inspire decades after you leave your seat. The Longshots […]

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
August 15th, 2008 · Comments Off
Vicky Cristina Barcelona continues the second coming of Woody Allen, begun in 2005 with the terrific Match Point. While not every film since then has been a masterpiece (Scoop, Cassandra’s Dream), each, in their own way, represents a more adult, more mature Allen than we have seen in a very long time. Vicky Cristina Barcelona […]

Bottle Shock

Based on actual events, Bottle Shock is a David versus Goliath tale, a yarn that wouldn’t be believed if it weren’t true. In a month not known for good films, here is an unexpected August darling.

Fly Me to the Moon
August 15th, 2008 · Comments Off
Fly Me to the Moon is not a great movie. It’s not even a good movie. In some ways, it’s barely passable. Yet, despite a litany of criticisms that I could level against it, all of them will fall on deaf ears — so long as those ears are attached to children roughly five to […]

Tropic Thunder
August 13th, 2008 · Comments Off
While cognizant of the fact that the year is a little more than half over, I nonetheless feel confident in proclaiming Tropic Thunder to be the funniest film of the year. Tropic Thunder is one of those rare films that is both smart and silly, equal parts gifted satire and laugh-till-it-hurts farce. I have to […]

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
August 8th, 2008 · Comments Off
If Sex and the City were a female buddy movie for middle-aged women, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is its younger version (minus the chic couture and rampant materialism). Ann Brashares’ novel “Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood” is brought to life in this sequel with the same heart, earnestness […]
